A subsidiary of Mallinckrodt Inc., Mallinckrodt Medical was not legally obligated to publish an annual report. However, the company’s management felt it was important to establish an identity separate from Mallinckrodt Chemical, which had been in operation in St. Louis since the late 1800s. The reports’ goals were to highlight Mallinckrodt Medical’s products, the global nature of the company’s research and manufacturing efforts, and the challenges and opportunities within the markets.

As project manager for the 1992, 1993 and 1994 reports, I was involved in decisions regarding the reports’ themes and for working with the writers and graphic designers to ensure the company’s story was told through engaging prose and creative photos and illustrations. I helped develop the list of interviewees and facilitated making those appointments, worked with the photographer to schedule photo sessions and oversaw those sessions whenever possible. The international nature of the company – offices and plants were located throughout the United States and in 15 other countries – complicated the logistics of the reports’ production, and I had day-to-day responsibility for ensuring the projects kept moving forward. I also edited the writers’ copy and obtained approvals for copy from managers and executive staff members.
